Mapleton approves zoning bylaw changes for Drayton school, severed farm

MAPLETON – Council here approved two zoning bylaw amendments during its regular meeting of council on Jan. 29.

Both were passed unanimously without discussion.

The zoning of the 2.4 hectare (six acre) vacant lot at 7 Green St. has changed from residential to institutional.

The lot is the future home of a ɫشýCatholic District School Board (WCDSB) elementary school, which is set to accommodate 222 students in kindergarten through Grade 8 and 64 preschool spaces.

The zoning change was discussed during a regular meeting of council on Jan. 14, during which Mapleton planner Linda Redmond described it as “pretty straightforward.”

“The lands are designated residential in the county’s official plan, which includes the provisions to allow institutional uses such as schools.”

The township has not yet provided site plan approval for the school, a process that will include a technical review of the site design, grading, servicing, stormwater management, buffering, landscaping, parking and fencing.

The school is expected to open in 2026 and will service students from Mapleton and Minto.

Farm severance

Mapleton council also unanimously approved a zoning bylaw change on a severed parcel at 6540 Sideroad 16 near Conestogo Lake.

The rezoning does not apply to the retained portion of the lot.

The purpose of the rezoning is to allow a residence on private services.

The severed lot is one acre, or less than half a hectare in size.

The severance was reviewed during a regular meeting of council on April 9.
