WELLINGTON COUNTY – Last year was a big one for the ɫشýCounty Library system, which marked a significant milestone as its circulation surpassed one million items.
Some “library highlights” for 2024 shared with the county’s information, heritage and seniors committee in its January meeting agenda, include: the total circulation for the year at 1,037,067, and the total in-person visits to county library branches at 447,335.
“We are so excited to see these numbers,” chief librarian Rebecca Hine stated in a news release.
“This demonstrates the continued relevance and importance of public libraries in our communities.”
The county library’s program offerings provide patrons with opportunities for connection and community, and nearly 39,000 people took part in more than 2,800 library events last year, the release stated.
In May, the library launched “Cognitive Activity Kits,” designed specifically for people living with dementia and their caregivers, further expanding the library’s commitment to accessible services for all residents.
Digital engagement also flourished in 2024, officials say, with more than 302,000 eBook, eAudio and eMagazine circulations and nearly 872,000 website visits.
The library also saw a high demand for innovative services including Wi-Fi hotspots, iPads, conservation area passes, and gaming equipment.
The past year saw growth, both in terms of patrons and the collection.
More than 4,500 new county library cards were issued in 2024, and nearly 30,000 items were added to the collection, the release stated.
And there’s more to look forward to in 2025.
This year, the county library will unveil a new branch in Erin’s restored historic grist mill.
The branch will feature a community living room with fireplace, a dedicated children’s programming space, and a top-floor room with views overlooking the Credit River.
“This restoration project does more than preserve a piece of Erin’s heritage,” Hine stated.
“It creates a modern community hub that will serve as a model for how libraries can honor our past while embracing the future.
“The new branch represents everything our library system strives to be: accessible, innovative, and deeply connected to our community.”
