ARTHUR – A new child care centre set to open in ɫشýNorth this fall will more than double access rates for child care in the township.
“The planned spaces will increase the access rate for children [up to] age four in ɫشýNorth to 20 per cent, up from 8.9%,” Mandy Koroniak, ɫشýCounty’s director of children’s early years, told the Advertiser in an email.
The 88-space child care centre was mentioned earlier this month in a report from Koroniak to the county’s joint social services and land ambulance committee.
The report provided an update on the number of child care spaces in the county enrolled in the Canada-Wide Early Learning Child Care (CWELCC) System.
The system is sometimes referred to as $10-a-day child care, although rates have yet to reach that low point.
Starting this month, the province is capping fees at $22 per day for children under six.
Koroniak said the new Arthur day care is a for-profit facility that will be operated by Eh to Zed.
For-profit centres do qualify for CWELCC funding, and unlike fee subsidies, there is nothing special families need to do to qualify for the reduced rates, Koroniak said.
“If a centre is enrolled in CWELCC, all families with children of eligible age enrolled in the centre pay the reduced fees,” she explained.
An online search for Eh to Zed leads to preschoolcanada.com, which lists 10 locations across Ontario, and more coming soon.
“The owner also operates another child care centre in Guelph,” Koroniak stated.
The website lists a location in Guelph at 322 Eastview Rd.
The Arthur location, at 110 Frederick St. W., is one of five locations listed as “coming soon.”
The Advertiserreached out to Preschool Canada for more information, but the company did not immediately respond to inquiries.
The Arthur Preschool Canada “campus” is described online as “a state-of-the-art facility with bright spaces, multiple early-learning programs and customized furniture for small bodies and curious minds.”
The website includes a pre-registration form people can fill out to express interest in the location and to get more information.
In addition to the preschool in Arthur, Koroniak’s report said a 98-space centre in Guelph is also expected to open this year.
That centre, also a for-profit centre, is Polka Dot Montessori, which became licensed in October, Koroniak said.
